I was in the Need for Speed online community for the came NFS: Underground. I only participated in the drifting races online. It was particularly fun because I became quite good at it. I was never in the overall top 10, but in any given room i would be in the top 5 drifters. I eventually teamed up with another fellow drifter and formed a car club. Our denotation was our screen name with CC at the end, so I became EclipserCC.
It was important that I drifted with the Mitsubishi Eclipse because it was typically not the best car to drift with in the game. It was satisfying to win with the car because almost no one drifted with it or recommended to drift with it. People told noobs with Eclipses to change over to Impreza's because they were easier. I stuck with the Eclipse and eventually became skilled with it.
The reason I have not joined any online communities are from a lack of highspeed internet. Cogeco does not run a highspeed internet cable down my road, and the same goes for Rogers. The only option is satellite internet which runs about one hundred dollars per month. Not worth it to my parents quite yet. Another drawback right now is time. I don't have a lot of it at the moment. Maybe in 2 years I will try it out. Or maybe two years ago I would have if I had highspeed internet.
There are many benefits to joining an online community. There can be a feeling of acceptance into groups, as well as making new friends. Social Information Processing theory states that relationships can be developed to the same extent as real relationships.
